As far as credentials go, I earned a B.A. and M.A. in Fine Arts and Education, and a Masters Certificate in Publications Management. I've completed nearly 25 years of service with the federal government, having had the privilege to work for the Nation Archives, the Library of Congress, and now an agency serving the disability community as Director of Communications.

I am the immediate past president of the National Association of Government Communicators, having completed my two-year term of office in May of 2010. For three years prior to that I had served as treasurer, regional director, and president-elect. Some years back I served as volunteer treasurer and then president of the board of the American Sleep Apnea Association. Currently, I am also a member of Toastmasters International with the rank of Advanced Communicator Bronze.

Having started out as a copywriter and documentary film reviewer, I've written virtually every type of informational document imaginable on just as many subjects, as well as articles that have appeared online as well as in print. I was also lucky enough to be involved in marketing the first federal government website, AccessAmerica.gov, the precursor to what is now USA.gov. I am conversant about things like NAICS codes and ZCTAs, know what really goes on in an autopsy, and once conducted bibliographic software demonstrations in Spanish to librarians in Barcelona.

As you can imagine, this expansive body of trivia comes in very handy at cocktail parties!

Apparently, according to those who know me, I will not be able to retire thanks to my many interests. As an example, in 2009, I finally finished writing, designing, and publishing a small handbook based on a 20-year avocation of mine from which a pilot episode for a TV series has been shot.

While I see many of my peers "winding down," I feel like I am just getting started. I am inspired by a loving family and some very good friends.

Having reached a point of contentment and happiness in my life, and having achieved the type of meaningful success that nourishes my soul, I am for the most part free to help others in their own journeys of self-discovery, awareness, and fulfillment. My writing -- as well as public speaking -- is an increasingly important mechanism in accomplishing that aim.

I thank the creative people of Suite101.com for providing this venue and hope that something I write will resonate with you.
